Emerging Technologies

Emerging technologies are defined as modern scientific advances in numerous technology areas. These technologies are technical innovations that characterize progressive growth in a specific field with the objective of having competitive advantage.

Converging Technologies

  • A variety of converging technologies have appeared in the technological convergence of various systems moving toward common goals.
  • Convergence often refers to formerly separate technologies such as voice, video, and data that currently interact with each other and share resources to establish new effectiveness for customers.

Technological Developments

  • Over time, innovative techniques and new technologies are created. Many of these technologies are the result of theoretical research and others are the result of commercial research and growth.
  • Technological developments include additional advancements to current media and disruptive technologies. An example of an additional advancement is the introduction of the DVD that intended to expand the use of Compact Discs.
  • Disruptive technologies are when a new technique replaces a previous method and makes it outdated. For example cordless phones replacing traditional cord phones or automobiles replacing horse-drawn carriages.

Examples

  • Examples of present emerging technologies include information technology, cognitive science, nanotechnology, robotics, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence.

Debate over Emerging Technologies

  • Various writers have identified groups of technologies that are considered unfavorable to the future of humanity.
  • Advocates of technological advancements generally view emerging and converging technologies and creating positive effects on the human condition.
  • Critics identify the risks of technological change and some advocates advise that some of emerging technologies could pose potential hazards and even contribute to the demise of humanity itself.
  • Most of the ethical arguments focus on the issues of distributive justice in distributing access to beneficial types of technology. Some individuals oppose the ongoing expansion of advanced technology partially due to feat that the benefits will unequally allocated in ways that would cause detrimental effects to poor people. Others believe advanced technology could and will reduce poverty and eliminate suffering.
