Technology is defined as using and understanding a variety of tools, systems, techniques, or crafts of organization to find a solution to a problem or develop a creative point of view. It is applied in a general sense as well to specific fields such as information technology, medical technology, or construction technology.
Technology considerably has an effect on humans and other species of animals on their ability to control and adapt to their environments. It began with humans using natural resources to make simple tools. Modern technological developments have improved the communication barriers and enable humans to globally interact with each other.
Technology in Science and Engineering
There is not always a clear distinction between technology, science, and engineering. Technology is often a result of science and engineering. An example is when scientists are studying electron flow in electrical conductors and thinking of new ways to expand knowledge. Engineers create new tools and equipment such as computers and semiconductors. In this example both the scientists and engineers may be referred to as technologists.
Technology and Philosophy
Technicism
- Defined as the dependence or confidence in technology as an essential resource for society. It is the belief that using technology, human beings will have control on their complete existence using it to solve all problems and possibly control the future.
Optimism
- Views technological development as have positive affects on society and the condition of humans. This ideology regards technological development as morally good.
Pessimism
- Views the opposite of optimism and states technological development has negative effects of humans and the environment. Suggests that freedom and psychological health are compromised for technological advancements.
Appropriate Technology
- Describes incidences where it is not appropriate to use very new technologies or older technologies that required access to components imported from a different location. This concern caused the eco-village movement to emerge.
Use of Technology in Other Animals
Aside from humans, other species of animals often use basic technology. Some primates, dolphins, and crows have been observed using technology forms. An example is a gorilla using a branch as a walking stick to determine the depth of water. Another example would be beavers constructing dams.
